John David Cheal joined the Royal
Australian Navy in 1954, reaching the rank of Petty
Officer and qualifying for Chief Petty
Officer. Life in the Navy was both
challenging and rewarding but there was another
side of John that maritime service
knew little of, his passion for writing. In the lull of a dark and
cold nightly watch, John would put pen to paper.
In
1966 he paid off and returned to civilian
life. With a young family to support, he
travelled Australia undertaking a variety of
professional positions in the Security
Industry. Whilst stable employment consumed
the majority of his time, his love of
creative writing
never waned. An avid scribbler, he
would jot down random thoughts and feelings as
inspired. Unfortunately the
circumstances of life prevented him
from tackling his passion as a career.
It
was not until he retired that John finally found
time to dedicate himself to his writing. He
enrolled in a writing course graduating with a
Diploma in Professional Children's Writing.
This would later lead to discussions with
Buttermoth Press and the publication of his first
children's book in February, 2007.
John David Cheal passed away on Wednesday, 25
November 2009. He leaves behind three children and six grandchildren.
